The Chams are an indigenous people of Central Vietnam. According to the French Academic Network on Asian Studies, for roughly 19 centuries the mysterious civilization was only known through historical and archaeological documents. 

Aside from the Danang Museum, the Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture is the best place to learn about this ancient kingdom. Housing the country’s largest collection of Cham artifacts, visitors can find 2,000 sandstone, terracotta, and bronze Cham sculptures.

More so than this, this exhibition highlights the fierce independence of the Danang people in general. Numerous stories and pictures depict this independence first-hand, and it’s possible to see how well Danang represented Vietnam in times of combat.  

Ethnographic Displays

On the third floor of the Danang museum is an exhibition highlighting Danang and neighboring Quang Nam’s ethnic communities. Displayed are labor, weaving, and knitting tools as well as costumes and art that represents these cultures.

The Co Tu people are an example of one ethnic community who have been living alongside nature in the mountainous regions of Tay Giang, Dong Giang, Quang Nam, Hue, and Danang. Living sustainably and self-sufficiently off the land, these peaceful people are among a few in Vietnam who embrace tradition. 

Ancient Pottery & Ceramics
